Finding the one language you share with your audience sometimes means letting go of the language you use to talk shop. This requires creative translation, often referred to as transcreation. In essence, this requires commissioning new text based on information provided by an for-information translation. It is commonly needed in advertising and marketing. To achieve the best results, buyer and translator/copywriter need to communicate closely – a process that takes time involving in-depth briefings on tone of voice, on style guides, on the brand and its market.
For Marketing and Sales
In a detailed briefing you define your requirements for the translation at hand. In a first step, the material is translated for accurate information. In a second step, the translation is edited for tone, style, language, and readability based on your briefing to ensure the translated text suits your target audience and purpose. After editing, a professional proofreader will make sure the text is ready for publication based on the style sheet you provide.
Material for a Wider Audience
Translated material to be published to a wider audience is generally edited by a second translator. I either collaborate with a client-appointed editor or suggest a reliable and experienced colleague. To ensure quality, he or she handles secondary checks and edits. In my experience, best results are achieved by a tag-team of translators who are also versatile copy writers and/or editors. Final proofreading is, of course, part of the process.
